Case study: Electric Sunsets – Cruise Back to the 90s with Marella Cruises

News & Stories

Who remembers the 90s? The era of girl power, double denim, and the beginning of the internet age. Ahhh, those were the days…

They were no longer just a distant memory onboard Marella Explorer in September 2019, though, when we partnered with Marella Cruises for Electric Sunsets – Cruise Back to the 90s.

The setting

Our production team are well-versed with creating the most spectacular concepts for clients of all sizes, and this themed cruise by Marella Cruises was no different.

From scenery and staging, to props and ponchos (we did sail the North Sea, after all!) – our team delivered a bespoke solution that gave the event its personality and allowed guests immerse themselves in everything 90s.

Starting in the Newcastle Cruise Terminal, fancy-dress wearing party-goers were welcomed with on-brand signage and props, which carried on to the ship, where the nostalgia really kicked-in.

Bespoke staging across the entertainment areas gave a unique feel to each venue, including on Pool Deck where a 90s look transformed Explorer from its regular sailings.

The detail ranged from stickers featuring well-known 90s quotes, and life-size cut-outs of icons from the era, to complete venue rebrands.

The acts

The stand-out line-up for Electric Sunsets was led and managed by our in-house talent agency, who have vast experience in providing and managing acts for bespoke events.

For a successful 90s cruise, we needed girl power and that came with Irish group B*Witched, who enjoyed chart-topping hits including ‘C’est La Vie’ and ‘Rollercoaster’.

And, of course, there had to be a boy band, or two. 5IVE are one of the biggest UK boy bands in history, and they rocked the ship with their Top 10 hits including ‘Slam Dunk (Da Funk)’, while 911 and S Club Party also brought the party in style.

When night fell, our DJ’s took to the stage – DJ SASH! put on a show to remember, before Dave Pearce set Pool Deck alight the following night.

On top of all of that, there were tributes to the Spice Girls, Oasis, Stone Roses and Kylie Minogue. Not to mention 90s look-a-likes Kevin and Perry!

The tech

The tedav team, made up of experienced cruise industry professionals, designed, rigged, programmed and operated the multi-million-pound AV systems to support the successful delivery of the event.

More than 50 members of staff were involved with in the 20-hour load-in, which saw just over 30 tonnes of state-of-the-art AV equipment craned onto Marella Explorer, after being sourced from prime international manufacturers such as JBL, Crown, SGM, Martin Lights, Chauvet, ProLights, Shermann Audio, Sennheiser and Soundcraft.

When onboard, guests were immersed into a bespoke set-up for sound, lighting, video and special effects, which were manned across all four days by our dedicated team of technicians.

The result

Sailing from Newcastle, to Ijmuiden (For Amsterdam), Zeebrugge (for Bruges) and Southampton, 2,000 passengers enjoyed a festival at sea, getting their nostalgic fix of 90s pop culture.

And we’re again partnering with Marella Cruises in 2020, for Electric Sunsets – 90s vs 00s, featuring Vengaboys, Scouting For Girls, Artful Dodger, Ultrabeat, the return of DJ SASH!, and tributes to many icons from the nineties and noughties – click here for more information.
